I have a 1250 Cub Cadet with hydrostatic drive. I recently changed the hydraulic oil filter and refilled the reservoir with hydraulic fluid unitl fluid leaked out the fill hole at the rear of the mower. Now, oil leaks through the vent holes at the top of the assembly above the filter when the Cub is in motion - i.e., the hydrostatic drive is operating. What has happened? Today, I refilled it until the fluid ran out the fill hole, and it held over a quart!!! The closer to full it is, the faster the oil comes out the vent when the Cub is in motion. One solution is to run it low on oil so it won't run out the vent. However, I don't think this would be very good for the hydrostatic drive. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Thanks

No, it was sitting level. I've filled it numerous times over the years, always until it runs out the fill hole, and this is the first time it has done this. ....

I don't know the tractor so I'm just poking around at general ideas. Since you've done this many times I assume you've got the procedures down so there shouldn't be any surprises.

Something that might do it is if the oil were foaming. I don't know if it flows or bubbles out of the vent or if there's any way to tell if there's a lot of air in the oil. Suction line troubles such as clogged screens, clogged or wrong filter or wrong oil might do it. It might be a far-fetched idea but perhaps something to check. I don't know how much filling it with the hydraulics extended might change the level when they're retracted. ....

What type hydrolic oil and filter did you use? The only only filter and oil I would use is from a Cub Cadet dealer. The hydrolic oil I use is Hy-Tran Ultra.
Oil is around $10 a gal. I change filter and fill reservior every year. I don't drain resesvior.

I think you are having foaming problem causing oil to run out the vent.

I have a IH Cub Cadet 149 that I pull a moldboard plow. I never the problem your having. I go to several plow days every year and not afraid to put the hammer down. ....

It sounds like the oil is leaking from the relief valves at the top of the hydro. There are pins at the top which are pushed down by the release lever when you are pushing the tractor. One valve is in the reverse circuit and one in the forward circuit. Newer tractors and the replacements have automatic releases with vent holes rather than pins. I don't know of any repair kits or repair procedures. They will have to be replaced. ....

This is a old post being revisited and hard to tell if the original problem wasn't solved all ready. It is very easy to remove the top cover off the center console with the four screws to see where it is leaking from on the top but therre is also an external tube that from time to time causes a problem that might look or be the culprit here as they crack and will spray in different dirextions making it difficult to detect the exact leak. ....
